COURSE DESCRIPTION

The proposed and restructured Bachelor of Commerce External Degree Program as an integrated Programme incorporating disciplines in accounting, finance, economics, management, Information Technology, Business Mathematics & Statistics and business environment which is commenced on August 2013 is initiated and parented by the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, and implemented through Center for Open and Distance Learning  (CODL), University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

The number of students sitting for the G.C.E. Advanced Level in Commerce Stream has steadily increased over the years. Consequently the annual intake to universities have also increased, but not adequate to handle the increased demand to the facility constraints.

Main reason for establishing of this B.Com- External Degree Program is to provide opportunities for those who qualified in G. C. E. (A/L) and those who posses adequate academic requirement for higher studies but did not get opportunities for pursuing a higher studies in Sri Lankan National University System. There is a huge demand from those who are working in state and private sector organizations.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The ODL BComHons degree program has been designed to develop cognitive, personal and professional competencies of its graduates to flourish in this complex and competitive global environment through intellectual autonomy, personal development and lifelong learning.  A commerce graduate should be able to think critically, conceptually, and reflectively, as well as analyze and apply underlying theories, identify issues, develop suitable strategies for their resolution, and use strategic decision-making processes. Their interpersonal skills, self-discipline, multicultural and language competencies, moral and ethical values are also emphasized. On the successful completion of the ODL BComHons degree program, the students must be geared up to take real world challenges and have confidence and capability to fulfill the aspiration of the Department of Commerce in the University of Jaffna. The ideal student the department anticipates on the completion of the ODL BComHons degree program should have

  • PLO 01: Subject / Theoretical Knowledge
    Acquire up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge and theoretical and conceptual understanding in the broad area of Commerce.
  • PLO 02: Practical Knowledge and Application
    Develop aptitude to comprehend the role of the Commerce in the national economy and influence on economic development of changes in the broad field of Commerce and ability to perform any task in the field of the degree program independently.

    Communicate information, ideas, issues, problems and solutions in the realm of commerce efficiently and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • PLO 04: Teamwork and Leadership
    Apply an adaptive and collaborative approach to work with others in a variety of business and professional contexts.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

An applicant may be considered for Admission to the ODL BCom degree programme, if he/she has:

  • Three passes in the G.C.E. (A/L) examination in commerce stream in one sitting.
    OR
  • Any other academic / professional qualification which is equivalent to SLQF Level 2 in the relevant field of study.

SELECTION

Applications for Level 1 of ODL Bachelor of Commerce degree program will be invited through open advertisements in local/national printed media, social media and official websites of Departments, Faculty, CODL and the University. The completed application form and required documents along with receipt of application processing fee paid should be submitted on or before specified deadline.

The selection of candidates will be made through one of the criteria or combination of them based on number of applicants and circumstances: Z score, aptitude test, recognition of prior learning and interview. Maximum number of students allowed to Level 1 of ODL B.Com Degree Program is twice of the number of internal students admitted Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree program as prescribed in Commission circular 20/2017.
