COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program offered by the Centre for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) at the University of Jaffna is a flexible and accessible three-year, semester-based course designed for students seeking higher education through open and distance learning. The program spans six semesters.

The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the arts and humanities, with a wide range of subjects such as literature, history, sociology, economics, and political science. The program emphasizes critical thinking, communication skills, and research methodologies, preparing graduates for various career opportunities in education, public administration, media, and more.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Programme learning outcomes refer to the knowledge, skills, abilities and mindset that the students are expected to demonstrate upon completion of an academic programme. The graduates of the Bachelor of Arts (external) degree are expected to:

  • PLO 1: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts and principles in the major fields of humanities and social sciences.
  • PLO 2: apply knowledge to develop arguments and make sound judgments
  • PLO 3: demonstrate skills to work both independently and collaboratively with others and lead others.
  • PLO 4: develop creative, innovative and critical thinking for understanding the dynamics of social and professional life.
  • PLO 5: show initiative, value personal responsibility and demonstrate accountability.
  • PLO 6: demonstrate transferrable skills including information communication technology.
  • PLO 7: propose solutions to solve contemporary issues on humanities and social sciences.
  • PLO 8: value hands-on workplace learning and develop appropriate strategies for adapting to changing environments.
  • PLO 9: recognize social responsibility and the need for active participation in the economic development of the country.
  • PLO 10: generate positive attitudes and maintain strong personal and professional ethics.
  • PLO 11: develop a clear vision for life in search of securing a desired career and social commitments.
  • PLO 12: show desire to learn new skills and identify ways of independent and lifelong learning.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

Selection and Admission criteria for Bachelor of Arts degree program (New Curriculum). An applicant may be considered for Admission to the ODL BA degree programme, if he/she has:

  • Three passes in the G.C.E. (A/L) examination in any stream in one sitting and 30% or above scored for the common general paper.
    OR
  • Any other academic / professional qualification which is equivalent to SLQF Level 2 in the relevant field of study.

SELECTION

  • Level I selection will be made by conducting an aptitude examination.
  • Level II selection will be made on the marks they scored for the above examination and by certificate verification based on the following criteria,
    • Aptitude Exam Score: 60% weight
      60% of the weight will be given to the aptitude score the candidate received.
    • A/L Results: 40% weight
      Marks for A/L grades will be allocated as follows : A=13.3,B=10,C=8,S=6

Note: The total number of candidates will be decided time to time at the BoS-BA and the faculty board with the approval of the Senate of the University.
